A mind map was created prompted by the topic of screen time.
Avoiding the usual suspects like addiction and safety I tried to explore areas that might be less saturated and ultimately far more fun.
This first week is observation.
I have contemplated many areas as seen in the mind map below
Let me take you through a few Topics.

I am deliberately staying away from screen addiction and screen time for children.
This is an area that is so open and broad and controversial.
Authentication/Security adding increasing screen interaction and devices
Immediately one of my most personal battles with screen time began - as I set up this blog I am prompted by passwords and device authentication. My phone is downstairs so I need to go and find it just to login. Shortly afterwards my children call out  -  they need my phone to authenticate a chess game they would like to purchase on my laptop - yes it is free but needs to be authorised. Perfect I find a podcast on the ABC radio about screen time but trying to get it downloaded on the iPad  means it needs authenticating by another apple device  - no one in my family of 5 knows which device the one code was sent too... oh wait mum - maybe its dads old phone that is flat.
My first observation is that in trying to focus on just one thing and removing myself from distraction - watching a movie with my family, doing my masters research, doing online shopping or even listening to the radio requires me to have multiple screens charged and near by. One screen requires another.
This made me think about the way we unlock our phones and how the security problems are evolving with design solutions and then creating more design problems in turn
Screen Time (smart watches) and how they appear to be reducing screen time
Personal experience again made me question the literal nature of screen time. When I did have an Apple Watch I did find myself using phones and computers less. It also taught me how to effectively use voice recognition and sway my user habits in that direction.
A bit of research found that smart watches and wearables are being used to combat screen addiction along with many other addictions - even physical ones
Immersive Screens
Screen Design/ Interface and form.
This area really interests me and how the interface we use can manipulate and effect our experience.
Equality and Education
Personal experience with zoom and zoom fatigue, the new normal and learning structures that are being displaced and replaced. Screen time definitely effects the teacher and the students when forced to take hours of online zoom tutorials. Interaction and expectation have changed already.
Economics will play a part
Big Screens and the Performance Arts/Arts
How your personal device is needed to interact with exhibitions and performers, phones are needed for conferences, concerts, galleries, checkins, tickets, and now being used to layer narrative and visuals.
Another area of interest to me is remote screens
Drones and their new found accessibility are used for all sorts of things. The grey nomads have been using them in really interesting ways to help travel and traverse the country
